Four Wellness Apps to Download Now
I know I know, you have enough apps on your phone you aren’t using. But trust, these apps will help your overall wellness, especially during this pandemic and dealing with the restrictions on what we ordinarily would do for our physical and mental health. Since I live in NYC, this pandemic has been especially hard during these winter months because we rarely go outside at all. At least during the summer time we could go sit and eat out at restaurants or go to the park. Now, if and when we go to the park, we can only stay maybe 15 minutes because of the cold. Needless to say, we have had to find new ways to stay sane while also doing our part to reduce the spread of COVID and protect our family.
Because I also need order in my life, I created a folder in my phone for all things “Health and Wellness”. This is where I keep all of my apps so I can quickly reference them.
I wanted to point out four apps specifically that I have found to be helpful in keeping me on track. Also, keep in mind all of these apps have free trials so although sometimes you need to invest a little money to get the most out of it, at least you can try it for free first.
Headspace
This app has gained popularity lately and for good reason. It’s an everyday mindfulness app for stress, anxiety, mediation and sleep. When you turn on the push notifications the app sends you little reminders throughout the day to keep you focused. This morning’s message, “Meditation is surprisingly straightforward. Our expectations and preconceptions make it seems complicated”.
If you are anything like me I find it difficult to slow down so having an app send me little nudges throughout the day is helpful. Usually the times I can meditate would be while doing yoga, but I found myself wanting that peace even when I’m not consciously moving my body with yoga.
This app is perfect for that! Check out their website for more: Headspace
2. EWG Healthy living
If you haven’t heard of EWG verified products, let me gladly introduce you! EWG or Environmental Working Group is a team of scientist who research and test consumer products to see if they really are as eco-friendly and healthy as they claim.
I use the app when I go grocery shopping to look up these brands and make sure they are really “clean”. I don’t want to spend an extra $5-10 on a product just because it claims to be healthier for my family. I need it to be true.
You would be so surprised how your favorite brands fall on the list. The products are given an “A” to F” rating based on how clean their ingredients list is. For example, Tide with Downy, has an “F” rating, see why here.
I make the swaps for cleaner versions of products when and where I can with the help of this app which really makes that process easier. Another great thing about the app, it is free to use!
3. SEASONAL AND SIMPLE
Okay we know that the best time to eat fruits and vegetables are when they are in seasons because (1) they are cheaper to buy and (2) they have the best quality and are the most nutritious. However, outside of your favorites, how do you remember what’s in season or not? If you live in the United States you know the supermarkets are full with anything you want all year around.
This is why I love this app. It allows you to quickly get facts on:
When the produce is in season;
How to pick the produce;
How to store the produce;
Recipes; and
A list of Farmer’s markets closest to you!
I mean… this is the best and easiest way to shop for organic and in season produce.
4. FITONOMY
Last but not least, a fitness app! Can’t forget about physical movement. Yes you have to pay for the app but seriously just going on their Instagram alone will give you very targeted workouts that you can do anywhere at anytime. I first started following them on social media and then felt like I needed the app and reminders to get moving.
I ran track in high school and it really has proven to be the foundation of my fitness for life. Since I have background information and knowledge of proper alignment and the best way to do certain workouts, I can really speak to how effective these workouts are.
You can customize a plan for yourself and choose your target areas which is very helpful when you are seeking specific results. Try it out!
Please share some of your suggestions for apps in the wellness space below! It never hurts to try and find the best one that suits your lifestyle.
