FAQ's for Yoga with KayaDejure
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Hi there! So I wanted to create an FAQ for Yoga with your girl, KayaDejure. Since a lot of my classes are tailored to beginner’s I realize some people may not know what to expect. If this sounds like you, read on.
What should I wear?
Yoga clothes right? Not necessarily, that’s a little vague and let me tell you why. You would be surprised how much “yoga clothes” is just for looks and actually not that functional. I suggest instead that you wear clothes that are comfortable and tighter fitting. There is nothing more distracting than being in downdog and having your shirt hit you in the face. Instead, wear a shirt that is not likely to slowly roll down when you’re in any position that requires you to be face down.
Also, consider temperature. Beginner’s classes won’t be intense hot yoga session but if you get warm quickly you may want to wear biker shorts and sleeveless shirts for example. In contrast, if you’re always cold, wear long yoga pants and either short sleeve or long sleeve shirts. Overall you want to dress comfortably so you can focus on the positions and not on what your clothes is doing.
I’m not that flexible, can I do yoga?
ABSOLUTELY! you thinking you are not flexible is you comparing yourself to some image you have seen. Fun fact, I can’t do a split, yet I’m a yoga instructor. Flexibility is gained over time. My practice has not focused so much on splits so although I am closer than ever at doing a split, I am still working on getting to that point. You should honor your body and wherever it is.
Yoga is a lifelong journey and there is no rush to achieve a certain pose. Keep in mind too that our bodies are different so some people will be able to get into certain positions that the next person’s body just won’t allow and that’s ok.
What do I need to bring to class?
Bring a comfortable and cushiony yoga mat. I don’t suggest practicing on the floor because most surfaces won’t be as comfortable. Other items you can bring? If you are familiar with different yoga props you can bring blocks, eye pillows for savasana (corpse pose), blankets or straps. My classes are tailored to be accessible without props as I give you several variations of a pose to choose from. However, props are a beautiful thing and can really enhance your practice. If you have them on hand let me know before class so I can share with you when and how to use them.
What should I eat?
You can eat a regular diet, however, try not to eat about two hours before class since there will be twisting and downward facing positions. You can have water by your mat to be accessible as needed.
Will we be meditating?
In my beginner’s yoga classes I do not host a meditation session. However, with that said, you may find yourself in a meditative state at some point during the class or in our final resting position. Whatever emotions and feelings come, let them. Yoga is known to help release built up tension in the body.
What if I am out of shape?
Yoga is for everyBODY. If you feel you are out of breath at any point you can always rest and join the rest of the class when you’re ready. In fact, it’s ok if you come to class, lay down on your mat, and sleep through the whole class (I have witnessed this before lol.) In my classes it is a judgement-free zone. All are welcome.
Do I need to register for class?
YES, please. Even though my yoga events are free, registration is required. I like to keep the class sizes small so it feels intimate and we keep the integrity of the space.
Did I miss anything? Please let me know your questions.
I can’t wait to see you in class!
With LOVE,
KayaDejure
