Fall Season Produce Guide
Fall season is amongst us which means it’s time for sweater weather, cozying up, holiday fun and family gatherings. Along with the many changes a new season brings, one of them should be the foods we eat. For many reasons it is always beneficial to eat foods that are in season. For one they have less pesticides and often times have traveled less distances since they are grown and quickly transported to your local supermarkets. Secondly, they are cheaper. Lastly, they are perfectly nourishing for what your body needs at this time. Foods in the fall tend to be warm, comforting and sweet. Think sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and squash.
I use an app called “Seasonal and Simple” (they also have an online version here you can check out, https://seasonalandsimple.info/ ) that I reference frequently when I am at the grocery store and forget what is in season. The app lets you pick the month you’re in for a list of seasonal produce. Not only that, when you click on the particular produce, you get the full season for the produce, a description, how to select the produce, how to store it, and some recipes.
Here is a quick list for the produce that are in season in the United States in the month of October:
Apples
Beets
Cantaloupe
Eggplant
Figs
Grapes
Kale
Mushrooms
Okra
Peppers
Pumpkin
Raspberries
Tomatoes
Zucchini
There are a lot more but this is an example of all the options available to us living in the U.S. for the month of October!
Healthy eating goes beyond dieting, which is why simple lifestyle choices such as eating what’s in season will minimize your exposure to unwanted pesticides and GMO’s that disrupt your hormones and overall well being.
Nature does an amazing job of giving us what we need, when we need it—and for that we should be grateful!
