Non-Profit Organizations Making a Difference

The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away - Pablo Picasso”

With about 1.5 million not for profit organizations registered in the U.S., according to National Center for Charitable Statistics, you will certainly find one that speaks to your interests. This short list will focus on three different non-profit organizations that are pretty popular in the legal field and are making BIG changes in our society.

Legal Aid Society

This organization holds a special place in my heart since I personally volunteer and see all the good they do for millions of people in NYC. Unfortunately, the poverty stricken people of NY are plagued by many faulty government systems that were ironically put in place to protect them. Additionally, the people are taken advantage of by landlords and other private individuals who know the legal system and use it to their advantage. In my time volunteering, I have seen how this organization has fought for anywhere from individuals’ civil rights, to their rights as tenants and beyond. For this reason I think New Yorkers should know about the work this non-profit does for their neighbors and contribute to the cause.

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)

https://www.aclu.org/

Interested in current events and feel strongly about civil rights? This Non-profit is perfect for you. I have signed up for their e-mails and I can assure you they update their subscribers on a daily basis. For example, they will e-mail about the latest bill that was shut down or what they’re doing to help immigrant’s and their families against the inhumane laws this administration is trying to employ. Because this organization is nationwide, there is sure to be a local branch near you where you can participate and help your community.

Amnesty International

This organization essentially advocates for the same civil and human rights that ACLU does, however on a global scale. It is easy to get wrapped up in our own personal problems, and even those of our country. It is even easier to completely forget there’s a whole world out there going through the same atrocities or worse, and people like us who are in a position to help, owe it to our fellow neighbors.

All of these organizations offer ways to contribute to the cause either by donating your money, time, and/or taking action right from your home by sending messages and mail to world leaders. What I like about each one is that they are creating a real change and making a tangible impact on our world. Out of the millions of organizations that exists, let’s support the ones making a difference!

Please feel free to leave a comment below with any other non-profit organizations that you believe are creating real change and deserve our support.
